How to ask your boss for more money (without feeling like a beggar)

Step 1)

It's not about YOU, it's about the VALUE you bring to the company.

The MOST important method is to

- Highlight your accomplishments

- Quantify your progress. Put a number to it.

Step 2)

Ask for a specific number. Don't say, "can I have a raise?" Instead quote a number.

I need a salary of 48 Lacs from my current of 40 Lacs. A 20% hike.

- Present your research on market values

- Give a clear figure

Step 3)

DON'T ASK FOR A RESPONSE NOW.

- Ask when a good time to talk about it is.

- Show that you are open to discussion and not holding ransom.

Step 4)

Strike a mutual benefit situation

- Find out what the company can offer.

• Speak to HR

• Check the financials if there is enough cash in the system

• What other benefits are available in addition to just money

- Propose a solution that works for both.

e.g. if you prefer working from home to avoid commute, it can be a negotiation point. You can compromise a small percentage of salary increase to accommodate work from home.

Bonus tip:

Practice asking for a raise

- In front of a mirror

- With your dog or cat

- With a friend or partner

The better prepared you are, the more chances of you getting through.

It's not always easy to negotiate a pay raise, but with careful planning, preparation, and the right mindset, you can make it work. Good luck!
